"Yesterday, I raised an issue with the union about our wages not being paid correctly for the last pay period. By the end of the day, the union had already contacted my employer and communicated the issue. Not even 24 hours later, the problem was resolved, and I received my back pay! We often don’t realise it, but we need the union—they’re the only ones who truly fight for us when employers aren’t doing right by their workers."

wHAT OUR MEmBERS HAVE TO SAY...

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Unions were started for workers, by workers to give them a stronger voice at work and in the community.

Unions collectively bargain for better pay and conditions, provide representation at work, and engage in community and political campaigns that impact members’ lives.

Joining the union is joining a collective, standing together for a better future.

United Workers Union (UWU) is the union for workers in Aged Care across a variety of roles including:

  • Care workers
  • Hospitality staff and cooks
  • Nursing Assistants
  • Laundry workers
  • Maintenance workers
  • Managers.

Our coverage extends across:

  • Queensland
  • Western Australia
  • South Australia
  • Northern Territory

UWU is also the union for Home Care workers in NSW, Qld, WA, SA, NT and ACT.

If you’re unsure or have any questions, get in touch with us here.

No. The Fair Work Act 2009 states that in Australia, everyone has the right to be a member of a union.

Your employer cannot discriminate against you or prevent you from being a member, or from seeking help from your organiser or local union office.

Union membership fees change slightly based on where you work and what you’re paid – most membership fees are $14.50 a week or $2.07 a day.

The join form will display the right fee grade once you enter your occupation information, before you submit your details.

Think of your union membership like a safety net – you pay small, regular membership dues, but you’re covered big time if something goes wrong in the workplace (just like your car, home or health insurance).

You can easily offset your dues by accessing the range of financial discounts Union Shopper offers!

Yes, union membership is 100% tax deductible!

No worries!

You can request a callback from one of our Aged Care organisers here.

Alternatively you can call our membership team right away, find their numbers here.

When joining online you can select to pay either by credit/debit card, or via direct debit.

You can also select your payment frequency: weekly, fortnightly, or monthly, so you can align it with your pay cycle.

Unions are run to benefit their members, not for profit. Membership fees are used to provide services and advocate on behalf of members, like representation and legal support,  training and development opportunities, expert information, collectively bargain on behalf of workers, and run community/political campaigns to further our members interests (like our Change Aged Care campaign!).

Union members have won the rights and conditions we all enjoy today over decades of organising, campaigning, and taking action. Sick leave, weekends, overtime, annual leave, redundancy, penalty rates and long service leave, and universal superannuation were all hard-fought union wins. United Workers Union members defend these wins everyday by being union, and our fight for secure jobs, domestic violence leave, increased superannuation and other rights and conditions continues.

Don't wait until an issue comes up -
unions can generally only assist you if you are a member at the time the incident occurred.

Our website is hosted on 100% carbon neutral servers in Naarm (Melbourne). The United Workers Union is committed to creating the secure & future-proof jobs workers and their communities need as our country continues to transition to a net zero economy.

UWU acknowledges that we meet and work on the unceded lands of First Nations peoples. We wish to pay respect to their Elders — past and present — and acknowledge the important role all First Nations peoples continue to play within Australia and in our union.
