The United Workers Union (UWU) commends the WA Labor Government’s revision of the State Wages Policy.

The new policy announced this morning will provide a much-needed boost for some of the lowest paid workers in the public service, such as education assistants, school and hospital cleaners, enrolled nurses, caterers and patient service attendants

The union will continue bargaining with the Government on each of the enterprise agreements before putting the offer to members for endorsement.

UWU Public Sector Coordinator Kevin Sneddon said it was heartening that the Government had listened to the struggles that workers in health and education had been enduring.

“The ever-increasing cost-of-living is really starting to bite and is doing nothing to retain workers in our schools and hospitals,” Mr Sneddon said.

“This new offer will provide a lot of relief and certainty for the public sector workers the United Workers Union represents. The vast majority of UWU members will be seeing a 10 percent wage increase over two years, in addition to an immediate $3000 one-off payment.”

“For more than a year, workers have been campaigning for a fairer wage, through walk-offs and other action and their action has paid off. The Government has shifted the dial on wages three times now, because of the perseverance of union members.

“I would like to thank the Premier Mark McGowan, Minister Bill Johnston and the rest of the WA Labor team for recognising the effort of our members in health and education in keeping WA safe and strong.”
