Statement attributable to United Workers Union National Secretary Tim Kennedy:

“Today’s CPI release of 6.1 percent for the quarter is entirely unsurprising to the vast majority of our members, who have seen the cost of everything from food to fuel sky-rocket since the beginning of the year.”

“While rising inflation isn’t particularly unique to Australia, what we are seeing as a feature here is employers digging in and refusing pay rises that go above three percent-a-year.

“Thus, we have a situation where inflation is rising, while wages continue to stagnate. In the meantime, profits are way up.

“The scales can only tip so far, and the union will be working to ensure that balance is restored as we look to industrial action across many of the industries we cover later in the year.”
