Australians are probably NOT aware that New Zealanders who arrived in Australia to live and work after the 26th February 2001 on a non-protected Special Category Visa (SCV) like myself are not eligible to access the Australian unemployment benefit. This bars over 650,000 New Zealanders from receiving a benefit. I am lucky so far the logistics company I work for has not closed but other New Zealanders on a Special Category Visa may be affected. Jacinda Ardern has asked Scott Morrison on the 28th March 2020 to make an exception for those New Zealanders who are out of work due to Covid-19 who are barred from receiving the unemployment benefit. So far the Australian Government has refused to change its stance to New Zealanders with non-protected Special Category Visa.
