From 5:15pm on Friday 5 July at the MCG, Russell Athletic manufacturing workers, who make Sherrin footballs for AFL and AFLW games, will be appealing to the broader football public for solidarity and support in their fight for fair wage increases.

Statement attributable to United Workers Union Executive Director Godfrey Moase:

Union members at Sherrin are resolved in taking action because they want a fair share of the wealth they help to create by making footballs.

“Everyone knows there’s a lot of money in this industry, and it shouldn’t just go to highly paid executives and managers. The ordinary workers who help make footy what it is should get their fair share.

“Tonight members will flyer the Collingwood v Essendon game seeking the backing and solidarity of members and supporters of these big clubs.

“They’re seeking the support of the footballing public in their struggle for a cost of living pay rise.

“The broad public support and recognition the 15 brave Sherrin workers have received shows even small sites can achieve outcomes by supporting each other and sticking together in the Union.”
